The first time you tell your traveling companion that you’ll be staying ‘at the Y in Hong Kong’, you’ll have to defend yourself against the assumption that you’ll be sleeping under a bench in a locker room that smells like someone’s sweat.
Believe me, this is not your father’s YMCA.
The Salisbury YMCA hosts a very large hotel with rooms on the harborside offering a view that will knock your socks off.
A quarter of a block away, have a bespoke suit made up for you at Biemonte Wong’s Tailor. All you need is 24 hours. This is quality suit-making, in contrast to some of the other things on offer. If you walk the rest of that same block, you can get a great meal one floor up from the street at the Spaghetti House. Although the air conditioner is never set above ‘very, very cold’, there are moments in Hong Kong when this can be a good thing. Plus, for comfort food, nothing beats the Spaghetti House followed by the short walk back to your room at the YMCA while Biemonte Wong’s is making you a very cool suit.
Did you actually get a suit made at Wong’s? I’ve gotten one made in Bangkok, but it’s difficult to imagine that one can get a bargain in anything these days in Hong Kong, including tailor made suits? I’m planning on purchasing a suit in Asia in the next year or two, and wonder if you have a recommendation where to do that.
When I first read your post, I thought of the Salvation Army, where I’ve stayed in HK. It is decidedly NOT especially nice, though utilitarian.
Fritz,
Yes, I did! It was actually a bit of an accident.
I walked in to the hole-in-the-wall space that is Biemonte Wong’s Tailor’s retail shop with Manfred Kohl, who gets his shirts made there. He gestured in my direction and said ‘This man wants a suit’.
They were all over me in a second with their measuring tapes and I was too embarrassed at that point to protest that I was only considering.
I don’t regret it, though. I agree with you that the price is not bargain basement, as you note generally of Hong Kong. However, quality is guaranteed and the cost could hardly be called exorbitant.
I hope to stop in later this year to get some dress shirts made. I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s good value in that.
Just found this thread on the internet. I can vouch for Biemonte Wong’s Tailor as i have had many shirts and suits made up by them. Also in the same building is Louise Jeweller who is excellent and has made many pieces of custom jewellery for me over the years. The two are friends so let them know you are purchasing from both places.
