Good grief, the monster stole the maiden and there’s no time left in the movie for rescuing maidens!
But listen to the music they make …
Eerie, restrained, occasionally picaresque. Who would have imagined that a monster and a maiden could collaborate like this? Maybe we’d better not rescue her just yet. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe not at all.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss may hit the high point of this unanticipated collaboration on track 2, ‘Killing the Blues’. The song’s ironic and bitter sweetness comes off tenderly in these four hands.
Plant’s voice is remarkably tender, Krauss’ predictably but delightfully so. They do and undo the blues, bending their unlikely alliance to the service of wistfulness, regret, memory, and–occasionally–hope.
The result does not disappoint.
