I kid you not, there is a market for gentle, Christmas instrumental music that preserves the religious nature of the holiday and does not overpower the motley collection of family, friends, and hangers-on that gather at such times.

This Maranatha two-disk album meets the need. You won’t remember any of these arrangements by February, but that’s not the point anyway. What you want is a little musical Christmas cheer.

Santa Claus is an ok sort of bloke, but we don’t really fancy him hanging around our house for hours on end, nibbling at the cookies and warily eyeing the dogs. He’s virtually absent on this cd, which is OK. He gets too much time and attention anyway.

Instead, you get traditional tunes from ‘O Holy Night’ to ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman’ to ‘Low How A Rose E’re Blooming’, all played by a competent but unnamed set of musicians.

Maranatha seems to have anticipated that this is what we wanted to have going as background music when Uncle Harry and Aunt Betty came by.
