Don’t skimp on quality when it comes to socks, ties, and ink.

As a recent immigrant to the world of fountain pens, I’ve enjoyed learning to write with two new Cross instruments. I started off with Cross ink refills that fit inside the pen, but have since discovered the joy of dipping. (more…)

When I misplaced the trusty Sennheisers that go everywhere with me just prior to a two-week family vacation, I was forced to pick up this Sony set in an airport kiosk.

Imagine my surprise at the exceptional sound, which competes with headphones occupying much higher price point.

If it’s sound you want, and you want it at home, these headphones would make a superb choice.

The big caveat: they are clumsy when traveling. The Sony MDR-NC6 has none of the stowability of my Sennheisers. They are big, bulky, and have not learned the exercise tha makes it possible for a giraffe to get to a zoo in a train car. They simply don’t fold up.

You drop them awkwardly into a Sony drawstring-equipped bag and cart’em along with you. They would easily break on one of my flights.

So save some serious bucks and buy this set of Sony’s if you don’t need to wrap them around a mobile head. But if travel you must, upgrade to the Sennheisers for great sound and great portability.

One of the best moments of Guy Relief happens when we realize we don’t need a separate get-up for every event or even for every kind of event.

They key here is to apply what we know about managing the rest of life efficiently to the building of a wardrobe. This means we’re going to need a uniform.

No, let me be more specific. You’re going to need a uniform. The first application of the sieve comes at the color line. You can pay for an assessment of the colors that go best on you, and this can be worthwhile. But women have an uncanny intuition for this sort of thing, so you can probably get reliable advice from someone you love or from someone who works with you. If you have any doubt about the lady’s taste, ask two. If they coincide, you’re golden. (more…)

You don’t need to mortgage your future to look good. You just need to choose wisely.

Since you deploy your intelligence all the time in your work and life, you already possess the qualities it takes to dress appropriately: economy, discernment, respect for tradition, and the occasional dash of valor.

Think about economy. (more…)

This is the counsel offered in an off-handed comment by time and life management guru David Allen (www.davidco.com) when holding forth recently on managing the unpredictables that spring upon the busy executive at the least convenient moment.

Our appearance is one of the few things we guys can control. Most of the time.

Doxa is a classical word meaning ‘appearance’ or ‘splendor’. In the Bible it is used of God and usually rendered as ‘glory’. (more…)
