I once asked the Regius Professor of Hebrew at the University of Cambridge how he stays abreast of fast-moving developments in biblical archaeology, a field of investigation that is related but decidely peripheral to his own work.

‘I mostly read BAR … ‘, he said, in an unexpectedly low-brow response for the hallowed halls of the Great University. ‘Then if I want to know more about a topic, I move on to more scholarly publications.’ (more…)

For those familiar with the internecine warfare that has burst with a force uncontainable by Episcopalian comity since sexual politics have become front and center in the American version of the worldwide Anglican Community, the subtle distinction between those of the tradition who now refer to themselves as ‘Anglican’ and those who retain their identity as ‘Episcopalian’ does not go unnoticed.

When an emerging generation of biblical scholars found themselves increasingly squeezed by what they perceived as the theological claustrophobia of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS), the Institute for Biblical Research (IBR) was born to offer an alternative. While many of the IBR’s members continue to hold membership in the ETS, it is also true that many members opt instead to throw in their lot with the much broader Society of Biblical Literature (SBL).
