Costa Rica has a public-private dual system of health care. As in most countries that employ this model, you do not want to get caught as a visitor in the public system when you’re ill.
Enter the Hospital Clínica Bíblica. Established decades ago by Christian missionaries and the local evangelical community as a service to the poor, the Clínica Bíblica has now become the go-to place for health care by everyone who can, including a long roster of Central American presidents and dignitaries. Care at the CB is excellent. If things get out of hand, they have strategic partnerships with a number of sophisticated U.S. hospitals who can do the exotic stuff on your aching body.
Any taxi driver knows the Clínica Bíblica, so there’s no problem finding it if you’re in San José.
