‘Ever see a bunch of straight guys who don’t know each other chortling and emoting about loud to each other about the clothes they’re getting for decent cash?
Me, neither.
Then my wife introduced me to His Friend’s Closet, the most amazing high-quality men’s clothing consignment shop you can imagine. And then some.
Tucked into an unassuming stand-alone house in Indy’s trendy Broad Ripple section, the Closet accepts only really good clothing. I should know: I tried to take some of my stuff there and they wouldn’t take any of it. The guy behind the counter—former owner filling in for somebody, I’m told, grouchy man, seen too many blokes like me—suggested I might be able to donate some of it and sent me packing.
No matter, I’ve got thick skin. I came back as a customer, armed with the gift subscription my thrifty wife had snagged me for Christmas. Now you wouldn’t believe the clothes I routinely haul out of their in small quantities for pitiful numbers of dollars. Italian pants, a cashmere sweater, the kinds of jacket I couldn’t touch new and still pay the mortgage. Killer ties for $8.00, let me say that again, eight dollars!
And it’s all very lightly worn. It makes you glad for the rich folks in the McMansions who pay full freight and then grow weary of, oh, those shoes, you know ….
Now I wear’em. With no shame. And I’m actually pretty good at shame, so that’s sayin’ something.
In my irregular forays into His Friend’s Closet, I bump into fellow guy shopper types who are in town on business from New York or guest lecturing down in Bloomington. They make tracks to the Closet to pick up a few things before reporting for duty.
Pity them. They have to travel to get there. I just drive 1.4 miles and bingo.
