The Peterson Field Guides are something of an institution among birdwatchers. ‘Remember that silver Mercedes that slid past you in the passing lane yesterday on the way home? Not too fast, certainly not slow. ‘Just smooth as it gets and all class?
That’s what the PFGs are to bird books. Birds of Eastern and Central North America (fifth edition) not only has the ‘specs’, the drawings, the maps, and the silhouettes that you need if you want to identify the birds that accompany us in the East and Midwest. It also comes decked out in a bullet-proof livery that means you’re not going to wear it out quickly no matter how many times you thumb through it with one eye on the bird that just came to your feeder or meadow and one on the book.
You may want to find a mate for this PFG, which will likely be a bird book focused more specifically on your state or substate region. Nevertheless, Peterson is the place to start. Get some bird glasses, this book, and go get’em.
