As a poor graduate student, I once inquired of the principal lecturer in modern Hebrew whether I could get away with snagging a mid-priced Hebrew-English dictionary.
I will never forget the condescending—not to say disdainful—look with which she said, ‘Well, I suppose you could … But as a PhD student in Hebrew, I can’t imagine that you can get away without owning the Alcalay.’
Looking back, I cringe to think I ever asked the question.
R. Alcalay’s five-volume Complete English-Hebrew Dictionary is in fact the only way to go if you are a native-English-language student of Hebrew. Anything else is a distant second.
Just in case you wonder whether the detail is gthere, ther eare entries for ‘cephalanthera’ and ‘chasuble’, and ‘cherchez la femme’. And those are just gleanings from a random walk through the C’s on a Saturday afternoon between soccer games.
Think what you could do if you really dug into this thing.
There are five volumes, but here is only one Alcalay.
