If you’re just a tad cynical, you might expect that the new MEN’S VOGUE might concentrate on self-possessed metrosexuals covered with Armani, leering at the camera, and wishing they had a life.
You’d be wrong.
This classy glossy actually contains a surprising breadth of content and some remarkable writing.
You do of course get fashion. The November/December 2006 issue in front of me promises info on ‘The Alpha Suit’ and – slightly less believably – ‘The Power Watch’.
But you also get a well-written essay on one man’s campaign to end the slaughter in Darfur, a surprisingly insightful work on actor Hugh Jackman, a very good car tale (‘The Porsche Speedster Rides Again’), and a take on the latest Bond girl that is enough to make you wish your name was James Bond.
It’s not a premier thought journal. But it’s a lot more than just a pretty face.
Nota bene: I didn’t title this review ‘delusions of grandeur’, but rather ‘pretentions of grandeur’. With a start like this, Men’s Vogue may get there.
Here’s to mildly congratulatory hoping.
